One out of six children worldwide cannot attend school. That makes 250 million children who cannot learn – and who have no opportunity for a better future. Because a good education is the most important factor in escaping from poverty. UNICEF works to ensure that all children worldwide have access to high-quality education.
The situation
While children in many countries have access to modern schools and digital learning materials, children in other parts of the world lack the simplest learning materials or even a school itself. Armed conflicts, natural disasters, poverty and gender-specific discrimination are the main reasons why many children still do not have access to schooling. Instead of learning, countless children from the poorer sections of society are forced to work from a really young age in order to help their families survive. Cultural norms and social expectations also mean that girls in particular are excluded from going to school. The lack and bad quality of educational programs have serious ramifications for the affected children.
Targeted support is needed to give disadvantaged children access to suitable educational programs and allow them the opportunity for a better future.
How your donation helps
UNICEF currently supports educational programs in Brazil and India to enable children to go to school and attain a high-quality education.
In India, UNICEF supports a program to promote girls’ education in Bihar and Rajasthan. The program pursues a holistic, practical and sustainable approach and comprises the following:
- Training for teachers to improve the quality of teaching in subjects such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM subjects).
- Preparing girls for STEM subjects by developing their reading and writing skills and giving them a strong foundation in mathematics.
- STEM education for girls: In specially equipped workshops, girls learn in a creative environment how to solve problems and develop ideas. Through practical learning and interesting projects, girls build up their self-confidence and develop important life skills.
In Brazil, UNICEF supports the School Active Search (SAS) initiative to try and locate children and young people who do not attend a school or are at risk of dropping out of school. The goal is to reintegrate them into the school system or keep them in the system. The program’s success is due to the following factors:
- The specially developed digital SAS platform: School-age children are identified and registered on the platform. This makes it possible for local authorities and social workers to work with these children to permanently (re)integrate them into the school system.
- Networking of experts through the SAS platform: Efficient collaboration means that experts can compile the best possible offers for supporting affected children and their families.
